So, what about the rest of the hamster’s life? Well, from ages six weeks to three months your hamster is in his prime. This is the age you’ll often find hamsters for sale in the pet store or from breeders as they are fully weaned from their mother and independent.
As they approach one year of age they enter middle age. Female Syrians, Campbell’s Dwarfs, and Winter Whites become less fertile, while the males of all hamster species remain fertile for most of their lives.
By 16 months of age your hamster is starting to enter his golden years. Your hamster will spend more time sleeping and less time eating, and you’ll notice their fur starting to thin just a bit. At this point, all females are infertile.
Once your hamster reaches 18 months things really start to slow down. They’ve got nothing left to prove, so they take things pretty easy. They tend to get a lot more sleep at this point, and by now even the males are infertile. Although your hamster lives on average between two and three years of age, hamsters of four years of age are not unheard of.
