Although you can provide your hamster with water with a dish, it’s strongly recommended that you use a water bottle. A dish can easily get filled with bedding material, can spill and wet the hamster's sleeping area. If you do decide to use a dish then make sure it’s something the hamster can’t easily chew through. Perhaps ceramic or stainless steel.

There are water bottles specifically designed for hamsters, and so it’s obviously best to pick up one of these, but don’t worry if you can’t find one. Just make sure that the bottle has a screw top and a metal drinking tube, preferably with ball-bearings in the tip. Attach the bottle to the side of the cage, or perch it at the top if necessary.

If you notice your hamster chewing at the tube it may be because the bottle is empty or has become plugged. If the bottle has water in it and the bedding is wet that means that the bottle is functioning just fine, and that your hamster probably wants something to chew on.

There are also some vitamin additives that can be added directly into the water. Can be great for giving your hamster an extra little boast and ensures your pet hamster coat stays shiny. But be warned this is not a substitute for a healthy food diet. Make sure you read and understand the label.

For an aguarium, either get an aquarium holder or an Oasis 4 oz. Bell Bottle Pack from PetSmart or Pet Supplies Plus for $7.

My hamster has the water bottle that comes with a CritterTrail cage, we've never had a problem with it and she uses it just fine :)

I use ECO Bedding, which is basically shredded brown paper bags.... my problem is, I can not get my water bottle to stop leaking... it is not a steady flow, but a drip drip I followed the instructions to create the vacume seal, but still it gets my bedding wet and I have to change it nearly every other day.... any suggestions?

I also have a critter trail bottle for the cage, but it seems worse, and is very hard to fill, and I really don't think they could reach it properly

I found that the water bottles that come w/ the crittertrail tops get corroded and fall off. They make a different model with a cap and a longer spout. Cheap too. about 4.50
