This is the most common type of hamster cage. It has a plastic base with a wire top that can be unclipped from the base, allowing you easy access to clean the hamster cage and to pick up your hamster. The basic version contains just the single level, but there are variations of this type of hamster cage that have multiple levels, connected by little ladders that your hamster can use to climb up and down.
With this type of hamster cage it’s important to pay attention to the depth of the plastic base – a base that is too shallow will allow lots of bedding material to spill over the side, creating quite a mess. Another thing to watch for is that the door to the hamster cage fastens securely as your hamster will be looking for any and all ways to escape from his cage, including the front door! Wire hamster cages allow for plenty of fresh air for your hamster, but the downside of this is that they are susceptible to drafts. If you house your hamster in this type of hamster cage take extra care to place the cage in a spot where they won’t feel any drafts. You can keep any breed of hamster in a wire hamster cage, but make sure that if you keep dwarf hamsters in one that the space between the wires doesn’t exceed 0.5cm or your dwarf hamster can squeeze right through.
