Hamster Food Dishes

As with water dishes, only use ceramic or stainless steel dishes as your hamster will happily chew anything plastic you put in his cage. The thing about hamster food dishes is that you don’t really need one as hamsters are more than happy to gather their food from the cage floor. In fact, sprinkling hamster food throughout the cage allows the hamster to forage and collect their food in a way that’s natural to them.

If you do use a dish, however, the hamster will likely remove the food from the dish and relocate it somewhere more agreeable to them, usually right next to their bed. Using a dish will help you gauge just how much food you are giving your hamster, although your hamster won’t necessarily be eating all the food that is missing from the dish.

I am an asipiring hamster owner. I've been researching hamsters thoroughly so I can make sure I am willing and able to give the care a hamster will need. I have been unable to find a hamster food dish at my local store that was big enough for a hamster to sit in (as I've read some like to do)and heavy enough to be safe form tipping over. However, today at my local store I saw a ceramic cat dish with low sides that was too heavy for a hamster to tip, and I was wondering if it would be ok to use that, or if there could be some kind of danger I'm unaware of.

Hi Shelia,

Some of the hamster food you buy will have recommended servings printed on it, but if it doesn't I would sprinkle enough in the cage that you can see at least a bit of food in every part of the cage. Take a look the following day and if it looks like it's gone he's either eaten it all, stashed it, or a bit of both. You can try experimenting with increasing amounts until you find food where you left it the next day - he's full and/or stashed it all. Either way, he's getting enough food!

i put some food in the dish and about a day later it was empty. i assumed he had eaten it all, but after readg this, maybe he hid it. i was thinkg about taking the dish out and sprinklg food thru-out the cage, but how much food do i supply on a daily basis? i buy the mixed food that has the pellets, corn, sunflower seeds and some other stuff. thank you!

Although in the wild hamsters will eat various seeds and insects, you're really better off buying proper hamster food from a pet store for your pet hamster. It's made specifically for hamsters and other small pets and includes a lot of the stuff they need to keep healthy.
