Yes, the same thing you normally keep fish in! There are two types of aquariums – glass and plastic. Both have advantages and disadvantages: the glass aquarium won’t scratch but can be quite heavy, while the plastic aquarium is lighter and won’t break if dropped, but it will get scratched over time as your hamster endeavors to dig his way out.

Aquariums provide the benefit of being draft free and make ideal cages for pregnant, nursing, or baby hamsters. Although aquariums have smooth sides making it extremely difficult for your hamster to escape, it’s a good idea to fix a cover to the top of the aquarium to stop anything from falling in and harming your hamster, whilst also preventing escapes by some of the more inventive hamsters – some have been known to pile their bedding in one corner in order to reach the top of their cage! There are usually two types of tops you can get for your aquarium – wire mesh, or a solid lid with air holes. The first option is preferable as it prevents condensation from forming and dripping down into the aquarium.

Ordinary water bottles can be attached to the side of your aquarium by using Velcro pads, or you can buy water bottles designed to hook to the top of the aquarium. In the cases where your aquarium is shallower than your water bottle you can attach the bottle horizontally from the lid of the aquarium, but remember that it will cease to dispense water when it’s half empty.
