Cleaning Your Hamster's Cage

You should clean the hamster’s cage about once a week. To do this you will need to remove the hamster from the cage – now would be a great time to let him have some play time in a sealed room, or to roll about in a RollerBall. Just make sure he doesn’t escape!

Although some hamsters train themselves to go to the bathroom only in certain locations, most will just go wherever they please. Therefore, it is necessary to throw away all old bedding material. Attempting to shake out the fecal matter won’t work, especially if you are using small bedding material, such as pine or pellets.

Hamsters also love to stash away a secret store of food in their hamster cage, usually in a corner or near their nest. Remove any rotting (or soon to be rotting) fruit and vegetables and, if you can, return the stash to its original location. Don’t worry about it if you don’t – your hamster will simply make a new stash!

Use only a mild disinfectant to clean the cage, as anything harsher will overpower the hamster and cause stress. After wiping everything down make sure that the hamster cage is completely dry before returning your hamster to his home.

the hamster may be stressed from his arrival but dont worry many hamster's are nocturnal and he will awake at night and play as far as the other one goes he's probably trying to figure out everything in his new enviroment

and you can use clorox wipes as long as you rinse your cage out really well with a garden hose

Thank's

Hi Shelia,

I would suggest trying to leave the litter for a week and see if it takes. The smell may turn you off but it may actually help the hamster figure out where to go, although you should be prepared for the possibility that they may never take to toilet training. If the smell gets too bad to leave it for a week you can do it more often - your hamster may enjoy it if you let him run around and play while you're doing it! Try to keep the items in his cage in the same spot if you can - that will reduce any stress experienced by your hamster when cleaning his cage.

we have 2 hamsters (2 cages-10 gallon aquarium). i tried litter traing them, but that's not workg out so good. one kicks his litter out and uses it there (pee) but still poops everywhere. the other one basically uses hers as a tunnel. i'm going to try pouring the litter in the spot where he pees. should i "poop scoop" every day (in between the cage cleanings once a week) or should i leave it all alone & clean it all out once a week? i don't like the smell of not scooping it out everyday but i wasn't sure if that stresses them (messing with their habitat). thank you!!!

Hi haas,

My first suggestion would be to take a look around the rest of this site - it will answer a lot of your questions regarding feeding your hamster and hamster behavior. You'll want to avoid any chemical wipes, such as Clorox, as the smell can really bother your hamster. As for music and t.v., well, every hamster is different :) And depending on the type of hamster you have they can live on average for about 2 to 3 years.

If your hamster doesn't look sick it could just be that he's taking a little longer to get used to his new surroundings. I'd keep a close eye on him though, and if he doesn't look like he's eating or there are any other signs he may not be well then it'll be time to take him to a vet.

As for the clorox wipes, I've never used them so I don't know how strong smelling they are. They have sensitive noses, so if you smell it and think it's pretty strong then it'll be very strong for them! If it's only got a mild odor then it should be okay.
