One of the most well-known diseases to afflict hamsters is wet tail. It’s particularly nasty in both symptoms and prognosis, and is highly contagious to other hamsters.

Hamsters suffering from wet tail have severe diarrhea, along with lethargy, irritability, failure to eat or drink, and a disheveled coat. They will often walk hunched over, or squeal in pain. The diarrhea is so severe that the hamster quickly dehydrates, often leading to death within 24 hours after the first symptoms show. Therefore it is imperative that you seek veterinary help immediately if you suspect wet tail. You may be tempted to use over the counter solutions such as Dri-Tail, but these are not always an effective treatment.

Antibiotics will be prescribed to combat the wet tail, and you will need to aid in your hamster’s recovery by making sure he’s kept warm and well nourished, with access to plenty of water. Try to disturb him as little as possible until he’s fully recovered, as any stress can worsen his condition.
