Hamster Treats

Feel like spoiling your hamster once in a while? As with any domestic pet, special treats are available for hamsters from your pet store. They come in colorful packets and could easily be mistaken for treats you and I would eat. However, as with any special treat, moderation is the key; these treats are tasty for a reason, and that reason has a name: sugar! Too much sugar can cause obesity in your hamster, so reserve these treats for the odd occasion.

In addition to store-bought treats, other food items can be given to your hamster every now and then. These include:

Safe Treats

  • Nuts
  • Shelled Almonds
  • Beechnuts
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Cashews
  • Hazel Nuts
  • Pecans
  • Peanuts
  • Pistachios
  • Sweet Chestnuts
  • Walnuts
  • Meat (always make sure it’s fully cooked)
  • Bread or Toast
  • Fish (again, fully cooked)
  • Eggs (scrambled or boiled, not fried)
  • Raisins and Prunes
  • Cheese
  • Crickets and Mealworms
  • Cheese
  • Dog Biscuits

Avoid the following treats:

Unsafe Treats

  • Chocolate
  • Onions
  • Raw Kidney Beans
  • Candy
  • Toffee
  • Buttercups

Just remember, a balanced diet consisting of hamster mix, some fresh fruit and veggies introduced gradually, and the occasional treat go a very long way to ensuring a healthy and happy hamster.

I was told that almonds are hazardous to hamsters because of the traces of some...cyanide stuff. I'm not sure if it's true though since the person never gave me a reliable source. :?

It is perfectly safe to give your hamster sunflower seeds, but like mentioned above all in moderation. Oils are difficult for small rodents to digest, if you give you hamster oils such as in nuts beware of how much your hamster takes in.
I have two teddy bear hamsters... a white one named Hammy and a black one named Bear they are wonderful loving creatures and they can become the best of pets. Make sure you feed them and care for them as if they were a dog, a cat or even a baby. If you arent sure about something make sure not to do it and research it until you find it about... Good Luck!
