Hamster Food Types

Hamster MixYour hamster’s main diet will consist of one of two hamster food types (or, ideally, both): mix and pellets. Hamster mix is basically mixed seed and ground grains, such as crushed oats, barley, maize, and in some cases almonds, dried apple, carrots, banana, and more. Sounds quite tasty actually! The other option is pellets. Although unappealing, pellets are a complete diet for your hamster and provide your hamster with plenty of opportunities to gnaw, keeping their teeth trim.

Understandably, given the choice your hamster would probably choose to eat something a little more exciting, so a great idea is to offer both: provide the pellets in the food dish and sprinkle the mix throughout his cage. This allows the hamster to get all the nutrition he’ll need from the pellets, and also allow him to exercise his instinct to forage by searching for the seed mix in his bedding. Between the two you shouldn’t have to worry about meeting his basic nutritional needs. Both hamster mix and hamster food pellets are readily available at your local pet store.

If you put pellets in the dish and mix thru out the cage, won't the hamster get bored with the pellets being in the boring dish and totally ignore them in favor of the yummy and fun to find mix? Why not put the yummy mix in the boring dish, and scatter the pellets for them to find? it seems like that would make them more likely to eat both.
