Sexing Your Hamster

Before you think about breeding your hamsters, you have to figure out which are the males and which are the females, or you aren’t going to get very far at all! In order to sex a hamster you’re going to need to get a look at its genitals. The best way to do this is by placing the hamster in one hand, cupping your other hand of the top of the hamster, and tipping him over so that he’s lying on his back.

Once you can see the genital area you want to look for two small openings. On males this is the penile opening and the anus, while on females this is the vagina and the anus. The distance between these two openings on males is roughly 1-2cm apart, while on females the openings are so close together that it’s often hard to tell them apart.
