Hamster Sounds

Hamsters are pretty quiet little creatures, but you may have heard them squeak from time to time. However, you’re only getting part of the story. A lot of hamster vocalization is ultrasonic, meaning human ears can’t even detect it. This is particularly common among infant hamsters and seems to garner extra attention from their mothers.

Even those squeaks that are detectable by the human ear may not be noticed by humans; the longest call duration produced by adult hamsters lasts a mere 1/6th of a second!

A female in heat will call frequently, especially in the presence of males. If a male is detected, the female stops calling and ‘assumes the position’. If the male isn’t interested, she gets out of the position and begins calling again.

You may notice your hamster’s teeth chattering from time to time. This indicates fear and/or aggression. This is most notable when a new hamster is introduced into an existing hamster’s cage.

sometimes my hamsters squeak loudly when they fight andf I've grown to understand that but sometimes they make a noise like a coughing-sneeze like sound. Is that normal?

I have just purchased a dwarf hampster. It is not my first. This little guy is chittering today. It has been happening for over an hour now. Through drinking water, running in the ball, climbing on me. It stopped while food was being chewed. It's not a cough, not a squeal. It is chittering. Is this okay or should I be concerned?

Hi Daisy,

Is she visibly shaking when she's making this noise? Is it happening all the time? It could be any number of things really, but what you should really do if it persists is to take her to the vet. I'm sorry I can't offer more help than that but it's better to be safe than sorry in cases like this. Best of luck!

I have noticed that my hamster makes some sort of vibrating noise. It's not her heart because it is too strong. If she's on the bed and I'm lying on the bed I can feel it when I am not even touching her? what is this and is it normal. Also I have heard make some sort of coughing noise but only once. what is this? please please reply back.
