Hamsters are pretty quiet little creatures, but you may have heard them squeak from time to time. However, you’re only getting part of the story. A lot of hamster vocalization is ultrasonic, meaning human ears can’t even detect it. This is particularly common among infant hamsters and seems to garner extra attention from their mothers. Even those squeaks that are detectable by the human ear may not be noticed by humans; the longest call duration produced by adult hamsters lasts a mere 1/6th of a second! A female in heat will call frequently, especially in the presence of males. If a male is detected, the female stops calling and ‘assumes the position’. If the male isn’t interested, she gets out of the position and begins calling again. You may notice your hamster’s teeth chattering from time to time. This indicates fear and/or aggression. This is most notable when a new hamster is introduced into an existing hamster’s cage.
