Hamsters are very susceptible to stress, so the transition to their new home needs to be as uneventful as possible. In most cases the pet store will supply you with a standard small container in order to transport your hamster in, but if you can, bring a fish tank container to take your new pet home. It’s much larger than the container the pet store offers, and this will help reduce the stress on your hamster. Adding edibles such as hay, alfalfa, seeds, or hamster food will ensure that your hamster doesn’t lack for a snack. If the trip home is going to be a long one add some cucumber so that the hamster has something to hydrate itself with. Don’t be tempted to stop to show your new hamster off to all your friends and family on the way home. Your hamster is not at all happy about the current situation, and wants to get out as soon as possible. Under no circumstances should you leave your hamster in the car for any period of time. Exposure to extreme temperatures (such as in an overheated or freezing car) can lead to the death of your hamster if he is exposed to them for any length of time. Ideally, you’ll have a cage ready and waiting for your new hamster before you buy it, so be sure that your hamster has access to the cage as soon as you get her home. He’ll need a little bit of time to explore his new surroundings and to make himself comfortable, so allow him a little time alone to do this.
