Dry skin or some worse? 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
At school we have a hamster in the French room named Chocolate.
Recently I noticed around his eyes there was dry, red, hairless shin. I thought he was just iching a lot and told the teacher maybe we should look for a lotion for hamster with dry skin.
Then I saw he had a dry, hairless patch on the back of his neck/soulders. I thought he had scratch himself quite bad and said we should get something soon.
Then, another classmate showed me a few days ago that Chocolate had gross scab-like things on his underside. They're yellowy and red. His underside in general has little to no hair and is reddish. Then on his neck he has little red bumps and it's quite red.

Does anyone know what this could be?
We thought maybe it was from kids picking him up and they're dirty hands made him sick.
We're gonna tell people to leave him alone for a little while, clean his cage and toys. See if he gets better.

Also, a few months ago for reason unknown to us, two of his toes died and fell off. Now he has a permenate "rock-on-sign."

I know it might sound cruel, but if he's really sick, we won't be able to take him to the vet. Hamsters don't live long to begin with and even if they do get treatment it's really expensive and doesn't always work. I'll get him medicine if I can afford it. But no one can take him to the vet.

I took pictures, but they're not very clear and it looks like I hurt him in the pictures, but I didn't, I promise.

You can see he's missing some toes on that foot.

The missing hair on his back.

The sores on his underside.

His reddish neck with bumps.

Thanks for the great post xylew. Well, it could be as simple as an allergic reaction - the hair loss is sometimes a symptom, and the sore could be him scratching. Have you introduced anything new into his cage recently? If you have, take it out and see if he shows signs of improvement.

If that doesn't help, it could be something a little more serious, such as mange. It's caused by nasty little mites and they can be quite harmful. The vet can treat it, and you'll have to disinfect the cage.

Let us know how it turns out!
