I've a hamster thats a week old - how can I tell if its hibernating or dead??

My bio teacher, who owns a hamster, has said that you can GENTLY rub your hamster and if it is alive it will open its eyes, move, or otherwise respond. However, it may nip at you for waking it so suddenly, so a thick glove is probably a good idea.

I couldn't tell if my hamster was sleeping or dead cause it had it's head hanging over the side of it's house, so I poked it. My hamster is really used to it though. So all it did was clack at me. :eek
