Hi there. I just recently got my first hamster and at first she was extremely active at night, now it seems like she is always sleeping. She doesn't use her wheel or the funnel tubes as much as she once did. I have also noticed she has hair on her backside that is longer and frizzing out while the rest is not. I have not seen that before, is it normal? Thanks, any input and advice is a big help!

Hi Mike,

Keep an eye on the amount of food and water your hamster is eating and drinking - if she's ill you'll likely notice a reduction in how much she's taking in. If you notice that she's drinking far more than usual and is still lethargic then she might have diabetes, but you'll need to get her to a vet for sure. If she's also urinating excessively or having more poops than usual then you'll definitely want to get her examined by a vet. Oh, and as far as the long hair in the back I don't know of any health risks associated with that :) Good luck!

Female long-haired syrian hamsters do develop "tufts" of hair at their behind as they age. This is normal and you may notice it getting longer with time.
