my hamster escaped once in my car and i waited 15 min for him to get out.

This worked for me; 
 
If you're REALLY stumped, 
Just try to get everything as silent as possible, 
very quietly walk around, and LISTEN. 
If you hear your hammie making noise pinpoint the area and watch it. 
From then it's a waiting game :)
