Some of the hamster food you buy will have recommended servings printed on it, but if it doesn't I would sprinkle enough in the cage that you can see at least a bit of food in every part of the cage. Take a look the following day and if it looks like it's gone he's either eaten it all, stashed it, or a bit of both. You can try experimenting with increasing amounts until you find food where you left it the next day - he's full and/or stashed it all. Either way, he's getting enough food!
