I would suggest trying to leave the litter for a week and see if it takes. The smell may turn you off but it may actually help the hamster figure out where to go, although you should be prepared for the possibility that they may never take to toilet training. If the smell gets too bad to leave it for a week you can do it more often - your hamster may enjoy it if you let him run around and play while you're doing it! Try to keep the items in his cage in the same spot if you can - that will reduce any stress experienced by your hamster when cleaning his cage.
