Hey i have just in the past week bought 2 female dwarf hamsters from a local pet shop. when i went they were in the same cage and all the dwarf hamsters in the cage were supposed too be female and i have noticed that they are bickering allot and whenever i handle one hamster the other hamster sniffs it very thoroughly before it leave it alone. in my room i also have a full grown male Syrian hamster. I was wondering why the 2 dwarf hamsters are so hostile as i don't see any form of territory being marked by either hamster

i forgot too mention that their fights haven't drawn blood or pulled out fur yet, but they are wrestling and also that one hamster seems more irritable then the other

Hi Matt,

Although dwarf hamsters can live together (unlike Syrians), there's no rule that says that they always *will* live together. That being said, they may scrap with each other and then break off the fight, whereas Syrians will eventually fight to the death. However, I'd keep an eye on them - if the fights continue on a regular basis then it's best to move them to separate cages.

I did the same thing, and ended up separating my girls. One was just too feisty... or you can put in a divider so they can see each other but not bite each other. My two little darlings now live in separate cages that are about 1 inch away from each other. See, smell, but no touch! My little feisty one even tries to bite me if I put my hand inside her cage, but she's as sweet as can be when she's out of her cage...go figure.

BTW, I forgot to mention that their scrapping caused one girl (the feisty one) to become blind in one eye. The vet bills were unbelievable.
