Winter White Hamster - Two Coats For The Price of One

We bought two female winter white hamsters last week. The guy at Petco said it was fine to put two in the same cage. (they were in the same cage at Petco already - maybe litter mates?) Now the girls are beginning to get agitated with each other and one is clearly dominate over the other. I really don't want to get a second cage (cost, more to clean/keep track of, etc) We bought a Crittertrail plastic cage, would it be a good idea to just add on to their cage and expand it and make it bigger and possibly cut down on the territorial arguments? Thanks, Hazel & Oreo's Mom

Hi, your hamsters could be fighting because the Crittertrail cages are really too small, the hamsters will have no place to move about and get some peace from one another if they wish to. Extending the cage to make the living conditions of both the hamsters bigger I am sure will help with their squables.
I hope this helps.

Hate to tell you, but 80% of the time you cant keep two hamsters together, litter mates or not. I have had several pairs and litters of hamsters and once they reach sexual maturity and sometimes sooner they must be separated or they will fight. The pet stores even have to separate sometimes. They will only live together for so long. There are exceptions to this, but they are just exceptions not common place. The guy at the pet store should have never told you to keep them together. I would see if you can return one, or look into getting another cage. The will fight severly...even to the death!

hamsters are natural animals, they really live in small gardens and medows so they find their own food, shelter, etc. it wants its own territory so that's why they fight, in pet shops, they can be placed together because the pet shop doesn't want to spend money for one cage per hmaster!obviously!!!!!

at the moment I've got 15, all winterwhites. the guys, from two different litters, are in two connected crittertrail cages, they scrap a bit but nobody has been hurt. The girls are in two homemade cages with their moms. they fight MORE than the guys, but again, nobody hurt, I think they are just playing. The mom's where together before they gave birth, they came pregnant, but don't get along well with the babies around. Just give them some space, DWARF hampsters like company, the bigger ones DON'T! Dwarfs live in colonies in the wild.
